Our first guided trip to Iceland in 2025 was such a success, Umingmaq Paddle Touring Center will be offering the trip again in 2027. We do not believe that packing clients in like sardines is conducive to a wonderful experience, so we limit our groups to 4 clients with 2 guides (plus our local Icelandic partners’ guide) per trip. Drop us a line after you peruse the information below and let us know if you have any questions at all. ~ Umingmaq

Thank you for considering joining us on our 2027 Iceland adventure. We will be spending 10 days in Iceland. We will explore two major regions of Iceland that include the fabled Westfjords and the rich Arctic Ocean waters of the Northern Fjords. This trip was designed to appeal to both paddlers and non-paddlers alike. There will be three day-paddles, a couple of hikes and multiple opportunities for cultural exploration planned over the 10 days in country.

We will fly out of Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport on July 8th. We will arrive in Iceland in the early morning of July 9th. On the 9th, we will drive to Stykkisholmur about 2.5 hours northwest of the airport. We will stay in a hotel and explore the town. The next morning, July 10th, we will take a day paddle that will include sea life, a myriad of skerrays and even a shipwreck.

The next morning, July 11th, we travel 5 hours further to the Northwest to the village of Isafjordur. We will stay in a nice Hotel in the sea-side town. The following day, July 12th, we will explore some of the oldest coastline in Iceland, which is a renowned for wildlife. Seals, Puffins and whales are all possible paddling companions during the 5-7 hour paddle day.

The following day, July 13th, we will travel 7 hours from Isafjordur to the “Northern Capital” of Iceland; Akureyri. The coastline views along the drive are spectacular and we’ll even have time for a stop at the Icelandic Witchcraft Museum. We will stay at a Hotel in the Akureyri city center within walking distance to city attractions. We can explore the botanical gardens and the Art Museum. There is also hiking in the hills overlooking Eyjafjord. On July 14th or 15th we will take a paddle out onto the Eyjafjord from Grenavik and explore the coastline near Hrisey Island, which is considered one of the premier whale watching destinations in Iceland. The day paddle around Grenavik includes lunch with the local guide Bjarni (Half the group will paddle on the 14th and half the group will paddle in the 15th for a personal experience). On the day you do not paddle you will have free time to explore Akureyri, a modern city which began as a fishing community on Eyjafjord.

On July 16th, the group will experience an amazing day visiting the Arctic Circle. We will take a ferry across a portion of the Arctic Ocean out to Grimsey Island. On Grimsey Island, we will hike to the Northern end of the island where a marker indicates the place where the Arctic Circle intersects the island. There will be opportunities to view abundant sea and bird life on this excursion. We will return to Dalvik the same day and spend our last night in Akureyri.

Early in the morning of July 17th, we will travel the 5 hours to Reykjavik. We will stay in Reykjavik on July 17th and 18th at a hotel with harbor views within walking distance to the shopping and cultural sites of the capital city. The Saga Museum, The National Museum of Iceland, The Whales of Iceland exhibit, the famous Sun Voyager sculpture and restaurants will all be within easy walking distance from our hotel in the Icelandic capital.

In the morning of Monday, July 19th, we will drive to Keflavik airport to fly out of Iceland. With the time change, we will be back in Minneapolis on Monday, July 19th around the same time we left Iceland.
