After our trip to the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, I convinced Sarah that a short 4 day canoe trip with portages would be the next progression in our canoe-camping development for the girls.
I chose the Bittersweet Lakes State Natural Area, which is located in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. This small four lake chain is secluded and not too far from home.
It is like a teeny micro Boundary Waters right here in Wisconsin. It was the perfect place to introduce the girls to the concept of carrying our gear from lake to lake as the portages were short and mostly flat.
We paddled, we portaged, we camped, we fished; it was a fantastic trip after the first day of rain and ill tempers.
Again, according to Sarah, we were moving too quickly, but it was a natural progression as far as I was concerned. After four days and three nights it seemed that we had canoeing, portaging and canoe-camping figured out. Now it was time to get the girls out on the big waters in a sea kayak.
To be continued…
